SNN TV: New culinary academy helps employ people with disabilities

The following article appeared in SNN, The Suncoast News Network on May 13, 2024:

A new culinary academy is helping get more people with disabilities employed in Sarasota.

The Gulf Coast Community Foundation gave a $50,000 grant to the Haven, which offers programs and services for adults and children with disabilities.

The Gulf Coast Community Foundation partnered with The Haven and Rise Up Cafe to launch the culinary training academy.

Students started a free culinary training program that helps those with disabilities in Sarasota and Manatee counties find jobs in the service industry.

“This is an opportunity for people with unique abilities to get training in food science, nutrition, baking, and earn certifications so once they have a certificate, they can work in the restaurant industry. We have spoken with individuals who have been a part of Rise Up Cafe and it’s changed their lives. They have their own source of income, they have an opportunity to get up every day and go to work just like the rest of us,” said Gulf Coast Community Foundation Director of Community Leadership Jennifer Johnston.

Gulf Coast Community Foundation said the culinary academy will hopefully serve 120 participants in the first year.
